The buzz is everywhere. The rumors are true. What is happening is indeed unstoppable. The big power shift has begun and like it or not, we are part of it. Hop on the train or you will be left behind.

During a recent event I had a conversation with leadership specialist Larry Broughton who also happens to run a very successful hotel chain. His experience managing a large operation that employs many Millennials has provided firsthand insight that is loud and clear—Millennials have different values than we do. They are not interested in slaving away for little money while jeopardizing their emotional and physical well-beings. This is quite different from the mentality of Baby Boomers who were taught by their parents that the only way to succeed and survive is through hard work. In essence, Millennials see us working so hard that we are killing ourselves because we don’t know what work-life balance is. It’s no wonder they don’t want the same for themselves.

My business partner, Jonathan Khorsandi, created a phenomenal automation program called Framework for Freedom because he saw a need for Entrepreneurs to have their systems support them. We had a long discussion about how we must approach our own business positioning to be appealing to Millennials. Why are these conversations necessary? Because we are not Millennials ourselves and we can’t fake being young and hip. We won’t make any headway by wearing hot pants and proudly displaying our latest tattoos. (But we can still rock out during a Thievery Corporation concert at the Greek Theatre here in Los Angeles, just like I did for my birthday!)

Here is the sobering reality check. Once you are over 45 your positioning needs to adjust because you are not the new, hot thing you wish you still were. Perhaps crazy Auntie Bea and Uncle Jonathan are more appropriate personas? While most of us are still very engaged and interested in new ideas, we often don’t understand trends well enough to see them coming until they hit us like a 2×4. Not to say we don’t know a good idea when we see one, it’s just that our roles are shifting to those of coaches, mentors, advisors, or consultants. We have experience, and lots of it. This is the value we can provide to those who don’t.
