Only 30 years ago, state laws required women to have a male relative or her husband co-sign for a business loan. Fortunately, things have changed. Thanks in no small part to the advocacy of the National Association of Women Business Owners (NAWBO).
Creating Impact Through Engagement
October 2018 marks the 30th anniversary of the passage of HR 5050, known as the Women’s Business Ownership Act. The Act was created to address what women in business need through recognition, resources, and removal of discriminatory lending practices by financial institutions. The bill was signed into law by President Ronald Reagan.
Some of the highlights women have achieved as a result of HR5050 are:
- The Small Business Administration (SBA) established Women’s Business Center Programs across the United States
- The SBA was to provide financial assistance to private organizations geared toward supporting women-owned businesses.
- The Women Business Owner’s Act has supported women to start and grow privately-held businesses at nearly twice the rate of all other businesses.
- On September 30th, California Governor Jerry Brown signed SB 826 into law requiring public companies to add women to their boards of directors.
There are an estimated 11.6 million women-owned businesses in the United States that generate nearly $1.7 trillion in revenue.
While these accomplishments are meaningful, there’s still more work to be done in support of women business owners. Healthcare, taxes, education, equal pay, and safe work spaces are just some of the issues facing women and women business owners.
