This is concerning because the gig economy is a place where we have 100% autonomy on how much we charge for our work. With no outside restrictions, we are completely free to decide how high to set the value for our skills. This makes the question “Is there a wage gap in freelancing?” extremely important, because it shows us a key factor on why women are traditionally underpaid compared to men.
What is Gig Economy?
“Gig economy” is a term referring to freelancers and other people who work on a project-by-project basis, (i.e. who work on gigs). So, is there a wage gap in freelancing just as much as there is everywhere else?
A recent article by the Biz Journals says there is. Read it here. Watch this video to learn more.
Are Women to Blame for Gender Pay Gap?
As The Growth Architect, I’m here to make a potentially controversial statement regarding the gender pay gap in gig economy: we women only have ourselves to blame. It may sound shocking at first, but I’d say it’s justified. Let’s look at the numbers: 57% of men on Upwork (a gig economy website) make more money than women. On Fiverr, 87% of men charge more than women.
What this means is that the gender pay gap in gig economy is due solely to men’s and women’s individual choices regarding how much money they decide to charge their clients. It pains me to say it, but it needs to be stated.
Ladies, remember to VALUE YOUR OWN WORK, remember to AIM HIGH, and remember to ASSERT YOUR PAY RATES firmly. Guys do it, so there is no reason we shouldn’t do it, too.
If this answer to the question “Is there a wage gap in freelancing?” struck you like a ton of bricks will you share your thoughts? Why do us women do this to ourselves?
